JA Mascareignes now offers Entrepreneurship Education courses with Project Management in Mauritius

The JA Mini Company Program 2021 has kicked off, with the delivery of the program materials to all the participants. This year’s edition will see the participation of around 120 students divided in 18 teams.

The theme for this year’s competition is “Innovation with Grit”, it is inspired by the need for young people to demonstrate a sense of resilience and adaptability to overcome the challenges that have happened globally in the entrepreneurship space given the COVID-19 pandemic.

The 2021 version of the program will also include key concepts of Project Management, which were developed in collaboration with the  Project Management Institute Educational Foundation (PMIEF). It will be an opportunity for our Mauritian youth to learn about entrepreneurship and project management.

JA Mini Company ProgramTM emphasizes on the business, entrepreneurship, and economics curriculum for young people aged 15 – 19 years. This program highlights business content, while providing hands-on experiences for starting, managing, and liquidating a business. Young people participating in this program use innovative thinking to learn and explore business and corporate career aspirations.

The program involves an average of 24 – 45 hours of hands-on business development experiences.  Teams are guided by a Mentor/Volunteer and/or their teacher over a period of 11 weeks. Some of the key concepts developed over the course of JA Mini Company ProgramTM are: Business competition, Customer service, Division of labour, Dividends, Fixed and variable costs, Shareholders and shareholder value, Business liquidation, Parliamentary procedures, Board of directors, Management structure, Research & Development and Pricing strategies.

JA Mascareignes selected as JA Worldwide Brand Leader

JA Mascareignes (Mauritius) is among the twenty one countries selected to be part of the JA Brand Leaders Initiative. Each selected Member Nation will act as testers and evaluators of the new brand collateral, JA Brand Guidelines, and the JA Messaging Book.

Implementation of the JA Ourselves Program in collaboration with Kolektif Rivier Nwar.

JA Mascareignes implemented the JA Ourselves Program with 27 beneficiaries of Kolektif Rivier Nwar on Friday 10th September 2021. The participants spent their last day of holidays learning key Economic and Financial Literacy skills in this full-day workshop and they received a certificate upon completion of the program.

JA Ourselves introduces students to the intersection of financial literacy and early elementary grades social studies learning objectives. Through hands-on classroom activities, the program provides students with an introduction to personal economics and the choices consumers make to meet their needs and wants. It also introduces students to the role of money in society while providing them with practical information about earning, saving, and sharing money.

  • Session 1: This or That? Make a Choice:

Students learn about the choices that the make in their everyday life. They make choices with the help of the “This or That?” Picture Cards. They read a simple prompt in their Junior Journal Mini books and make a choice, while those who are able, write a sentence about their choice.

  • Session 2: Do I Need What I Want?

Students learn differentiate between their Needs and Wants. They participate in an eye-spy poem to help them find need and want items on a poster. Using stickers, students create a needs and wants chart in their Mini books.

  • Session 3: A Rupee Earned

Students learn that they need to work to earn money. They hear the story Welcome Home! To learn about ways they can earn money using their mini books, students complete a maze and draw a picture of how they can earn money.

  • Session 4: A Rupee Saved

Students learn about the importance of saving money. They get into groups to complete a fill-in-the-piggy-bank activity in their mini books.

  • Session 5: A Penny Shared

Students learn about how to start a business and why it is important to share with those who are underprivileged. They listen to Charlie Plants a Garden, a story about starting a neighbourhood garden, they organise story cards sequentially in their mini books.

 

JA Mascareignes (Mauritius) to host African Entrepreneurship Competition

JA Mascareignes will host the JA Africa Virtual Regional Company of the Year Competition 2021.

The JA Africa Virtual Company of the Year Competition (COY) 2021 will be held from the 24th to the 26th February 2022. The COY is Africa’s premier pitch competition for high school youth who have competed in the flagship JA Company Program. The 3-day event brings together students from 9 countries across Africa to compete for prizes by pitching and presenting their products to a panel of judges composed of business professionals and influencers from the continent. The other countries that will take part in the competition are: Côte d’Ivoire, Kingdom of Eswatini (previously Swaziland), Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

JA More than Money at Oasis de Paix

The students of Oasis de Paix completed the JA More than Money Program during a two-day implementation on the 19th and 20th August 2021. They were 21 participants who attended both days of the implementation and were subsequently awarded a certificate.
Through the program, the participants:
1) Explored money-management skills and became familiar with the key differences between earning, saving and spending.
2) Learnt about the ways in which people’s interests and skills can help them identify small businesses they can start.
3) Identified the fundamental steps of starting a small business and develop a basic business plan.
4) Understood why financial institutions lend money and why people borrowed money for their businesses.
5) Explored the opportunities and challenges of global markets.
The implementation of the JA More than Money program was made possible thanks to the support of the New Zealand High Commission.
